Honorable Mention Rain Has Fallen All Day E. V. Brooks (lia) Rain has fallen all day. Banks overflow, thin pools join hedgerows. I’ll walk across the sky reflected beneath my feet, wade through the mere as sun filters between ash. Father is tired. He says he can’t get up. The coffee burns his lips and throat. I run through the house, pull curtains wide to let in the light. A chaffinch sits on the sill, flicks droplets from her back as lightening quickens Father’s white fingers. I considered leaving-- tried to see myself missing. Walls still withstood winter’s cold, slate roofs still bore the fists of autumn. The garden tangled with ivy and creeping vines, but it was still there, asleep without me. I pick up the tray, carry dreams deep in the wide pocket of my pinny. Another year, perhaps two I will stoop under their weight. Guilt curdles with lake-waters as the lower garden submerges.
